Squatting, a posture test for studying cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in diabetes

Abstract: Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a frequent complication of diabetes mellitus, which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It involves both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, and may be diagnosed by classical dynamic tests with measurements of heart rate (HR) and/or arterial blood pressure (BP). An original squattest (1-min standing, 1-min squatting, 1-min standing) was used with continuous monitoring of HR and BP, using a Finapres ® device. This active test impose… Show more

“…This may be reasonable for a well-control protocol in laboratory settings which requires the subject to keep still during the whole procedure. However, for the ambulatory 24-h study, BP may change transiently within a few seconds during daily activities such as walking, eating or drinking, deep breathing, and posture change [18]- [20], as shown in Fig. 2.…”

“…Dysautonomia is observed in different diseases in which small fiber are involved. Diabetes mellitus is the most common 6,11 . Despite of our little sample, we conclude that HCV-infected-patients with a sensory polyneuropathy can develop autonomic cardiovascular dysfunctions.…”

“…Les tests « au lit du malade » peuvent être complétés par l'analyse de la variabilité cyclique de la fréquence cardiaque par analyse spectrale des intervalles RR successifs, qui reste néan-moins un test de recherche clinique [48]. Un test original d'accroupissement (1-min debout, 1-min accroupi, 1-min debout couplé à un monitoring continu de la fréquence cardiaque et de la pression artérielle a également été proposé plus récemment [49].…”
