Squamous cell carcinoma lung with skeletal muscle involvement: A 8-year study of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kashmir

Abstract: Aims:Lung cancer is the most common malignancy throughout the world. Nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type, and squamous cell type is most common in India. Mostly, patients present with chest-related symptoms and signs. Isolated skeletal muscle metastasis (ISMM) is rarely seen. The aim was to see muscle metastasis and its prognosis.Materials and Methods:We are presenting our data of 8 years about this common malignancy with relation to muscle metastasis, either alone or with other system me… Show more

“…study of patients with muscle metastases, the median survival age was 15 months with extremes ranging from 12 to 26 months. In cases of discovery of other synchronous metastases, patient survival did not exceed 5 years, with better survival in patients with single muscle metastasis [5] . Pop et al.…”

“…Only 18 patients (1.5%) had muscle metastases and 10 had metastases at several sites. Pelvic skeletal muscles were involved in 66% of cases, thigh muscles in 22%, and paraspinal muscles in 11% [5] .…”

“…Inhibition of tumor cell proliferation by lactic acid, proteinase, and low pH in muscles are considered to be the most plausible reasons [50][51][52][53]. In human medicine, cancers characterized by muscle metastasis are typically breast cancer, gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma, pulmonary adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and renal carcinoma [50,[54][55][56][57][58][59]. In veterinary medicine, previous reports described muscle metastasis in pulmonary, mammary, and prostatic carcinoma, lymphoma, and mast cell tumors, with cardiac muscle metastasis described as originating from carcinoma, lymphoma, and hemangiosarcoma [60][61][62][63].…”

“…Рак легкого (РЛ) занимает первое место в структуре онкологической заболеваемости [1,2] и является одной из ведущих причин смерти [3,4]. В настоящее время актуальность проблемы РЛ стала приобретать особую значимость в контексте учащения случаев метастазирования опухолевого процесса в скелет, что существенно ухудшило общие показатели выживаемости больных [5].…”
