Squamous cell carcinoma arising from Stensen's duct

Abstract: We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma presumably arising from the left Stensen's duct. The tumor was discovered during management of recurrent left parotitis. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging were useful for estimating the tumor and coexisting obstructive parotitis. Relapsing symptoms and the presence of parotitis seemed to be characteristic of tumors of Stensen's duct. For a mass accompanied by obstructive parotitis or relapsing parotitis without salivary calculus, a … Show more

“…Such a signal intensity in a mass-like lesion suggests a parenchymal mass, that is to say, a neoplastic, tumorous mass lesion. Although these findings resembled those of a case reported by Tominaga et al 8 , our contrast-enhanced findings showed that the contrast-enhanced thickened wall had avoided the tumorous mass altogether. In other words, the layer of rim-enhancement surrounding the mass represented a continuous 10 transition from the thickened duct wall.…”

“…Based on previous evidence, the most prevalent site for primary carcinoma arising in Stensen's duct is just proximal to the orifice. A case report by Tominaga et al 8 noted SCC arising from the terminal end of Stensen's duct, close to the orifice. This was similar to the findings in another case described by Carpenter et al 9 .…”

“…1) may be helpful as they typically result from a StDC but not from accessory gland tumours [2]. Localisation by MRI and contrast enhanced CT imaging is also useful in this regard [3,4].…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] These tumors may originate from anywhere along the course of Stensen's duct and may be difficult to distinguish from those arising from the parotid gland, accessory parotid gland, minor salivary glands, and oral mucosa. A comprehensive review of malignant tumors of Stensen's duct by Steiner et al in 1999 reported 25 cases of primary malignancies of Stensen's duct since 1927.…”
