Squamous carcinoma arising in benign cystic teratoma of the ovary.A report of four cases and review of the literature

Abstract: Four cases of squamous carcinoma arising in benign cystic teratoma of the ovary are presented, with a detailed correlation of clinical, operative and pathological findings with prognosis. Confinement of tumor to the ovary, with an intact ovarian capsule, is the most important prognostic factor since patients wih extracapsular extension succumb to their disease within 2 years. The literature dealing with this subject is reviewed.

But the Indian authors like Tyagi et al documented this change in 4% (1 out of 25 cases).…”

“…In this study, the 3 pure OSCC showed strong p16 positivity, which was diffuse in 2, whereas only in 1 of the 2 OSCC associated with a dermoid cyst showed moderate p16 staining, the other being negative. The origin of OSCC in dermoid cysts has been ascribed to dysplastic changes in the squamous epithelium (59)(60)(61) or in the columnar epithelium that has undergone squamous metaplasia (59,62,63). Most ovarian carcinomas arising in the endometriosis are of endometrioid and clear cell types.…”
