Squamocin, a new cytotoxic bis-tetrahydrofuran containing acetogenin from Annona squamosa.

Abstract: Squamocin,a new trihydroxy-bis-tetrahydrofuran fatty acid ƒÁ-lactone(acetogenin),has been isolated from Annona squamosa L.(Annonaceae)and its structure has been elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence and chemical degradations.

“…The powdered seed and leaf extracts of this plant species are used to destroy insect, pests, also as repellants and anti-feedants. More than twenty acetogenins from the seeds of Annona squamosal L. are known among which the squamosin-3 and squamostatin-A were two major constituents (Fujimoto et al, 1988;Sahai et al, 1994;Araya et al, 1994a,b). Due to the presence of biologically active compounds acetogenins or squamosin the seeds of A.squamosa are reported to possess insecticidal and abortifacient traits (Chopra et al, 1986).…”

“…In Thailand, found nine species (Tip-Pyang et al, 2010). Phytochemical studies on some species of Goniothalamus have found several of this genus are discovered throughout the country such as acetogenins (Fujimoto et al, 1988;Gu et al, 1994;Jiang et al, 1997), alkaloids (Cao et al, 1998;Omar et al, 1992;Soonthornchareonnon et al, 1999), flavonoids (Deepralard et al, 2007;Likhitwitayawuid et al, 2006), styryllactone derivatives (Bermejo et al, 1997;Cao et al, 1998;Hisham et al, 2000;2003;Jiang et al, 2008;Lekphrom et al, 2009), furanopyrones (Bermejo et al, 1997;Fang et al, 1990;, arvensin, stigmasterol, (+)-aromadendrene, γ-gurjunene, goniothalamin, liriodenine and oxostaphanine (Ahmad et al, 1991;Hasan et al, 1994;Jiang et al, 1997). Therefore, Goniothalamus family could represent potentials sources of drugs for the treatment of cancers.…”
