Sputum viscosity: correlation with chemical and clinical features in chronic bronchitis

Abstract: (1973). Thorax, 28,[401][402][403][404][405][406][407][408] Mucoid sputum showed a highly significant correlation between pourability grade and viscosity. The mean coefficient of variation for each feature studied was between 13 and 17% for pulmonary function tests and between 25 and 44% for sputum estimations.Significant inverse correlations were found between sputum volume and viscosity, dry weight yield, neuraminic acid (NANA), and fucose, and a positive correlation with FEVI.o/VC %.Linear correlations show… Show more

“…The material expectorated was considered to be sputum if the level of viscosity and concentration of the marker substances of bronchial glycoprotein were above that of the saliva of the same individual and fell within the range found in mucoid sputum from patients with chronic bronchitis (Keal, 1971;Keal and Reid, 1972;Lopez-Vidriero et al, 1973).…”

“…In the present study, adhesiveness was graded as previously described, (12) and, at the time of the evaluation of the variables, the samples were classified as adhesive (grade 1 or 2) or nonadhesive (grade 3 or 4). In order to avoid the problems related to the evaluation of small subgroups, including the possibility that a large number of subdivisions might not express markedly distinct types, we decided to classify the adhesiveness of the samples as one of only two types, following the example of systems used in order to classify samples by color.…”

“…Thus, a required viscosity of~4.1 poise at 20 • C was obtained. The artificial sputum, which was used in the set of experiments, was formulated to mimic the properties of macroscopic mucoid type of natural sputum with a viscosity of 4.20 ± 0.4 poise [24] at shear rate of 90 s −1 .…”
