SproutAngio: an open-source bioimage informatics tool for quantitative analysis of sprouting angiogenesis and lumen space

Abstract: Three-dimensional image analyses are required to improve the understanding of the regulation of blood vessel formation and heterogeneity. Currently, quantitation of 3D endothelial structures or vessel branches is often based on 2D projections of the images losing their volumetric information. Here, we developed SproutAngio, a Python-based open-source tool, for fully automated 3D segmentation and analysis of endothelial lumen space and sprout morphology. To test the SproutAngio, we produced a publicly available… Show more

“…Particularly popular platforms for angiogenetic analysis are Sprout Analysis plugin to ImageJ, 102 Matlab-based AngioQuant for in vitro assays, 103 or AngioIQ, 104 which uses a graphic interface, as well as SproutAngio tool written in Python. 105 Carpentier et al developed Angiogenesis Analyzer 108 and recently applied it to fibrin-based assays. 41 There is also a commercially available IKOSA AI tool, 106 which exploits machine-learning algorithms.…”

“…In addition, quantification of relative erythrocyte area (i.e. segmented area containing erythrocytes/total plug area) was performed on H&E-stained sections using an automated intensity-based SproutAngio quantification tool ( https://github.com/mbbio/SproutAngio , Beter et al, 2023 ) from whole plug images scanned with an Olympus VS200 slide scanner using a 20×/0.5 Plan Fluor objective.…”
