Sprotte needle for intrathecal anaesthesia for Caesarean section: incidence of postdural puncture headache

Abstract: SummaryCaesarean section was performed under spinal anaesthesia in 55 women using a 25-gauge diamond-tipped needle and in a further 55 mothers with a 24-gauge Sprotte needle. Eight patients (14.5%) developed a headache in the former group, five of whom required a blood patch. There were no headaches reported in the Sprotte group. Key wordsComplications; headache. Equipment; needles.Spinal anaesthesia remains an up-to-date technique. Due to its ease of use, very low cost and retention of consciousness, it is pr… Show more

Figures 1 to 3 summarize the meta-analyses of ADP and PDPH risks for different epidural and spinal needles.…”

“…6 The Sprotte spinal needle (Pajunk GMBH, Geisingen, Germany) has been associated with a low incidence of PDPH in parturients. [7][8][9][10][11] The Special Sprotte™ epidural needle is a modification of the non-cutting Sprotte spinal needle. It has a solid bullet-shaped tip with a lateral opening for passage of an epidural catheter.…”

“…,-4 Previously, we reported a PDPH rate of 19.6% in patients less than 40 yr of age using the 27 gauge Quincke needle. 5 The reported PDPH rates vary considerably, for example, PDPH rates for the 25 gauge Quincke needle range from 7.8% to 37.2%, 13,15,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23] and between 2% and 9.6% for the 26 gauge Quincke needle. 2,15,~9,24-27 While use of the 29 gauge Quincke needle has been reported to result in an incidence of PDPH between 0% and 2%, the failure rate of between 1.2% and 8% may make its use impractical.…”
