Sprinkler irrigation on clay soils in southern Finland IV. The effect of repeated applications of water and nitrogen fertilization on spring cereals

Abstract: In 1967 and 1968, in the month of June, irrigation of silty clay soil in southern Finland by a single sprinkling, which involved the application of 30 mm of water, increased the yields of spring wheat by an average of between 880 and 970 kg per ha, or 37—51 %, and the yields of barley by 1140—1340 kg per ha, or 37—42 %. Repeating the irrigation after about one week further increased the wheat yields on the average by from 670 to 800 kg per ha and the barley yields between 810 and 860 kg per ha. The effect of t… Show more

“…Finnish soils are saturated with water in the spring, but a thin layer of the clay surface is rapidly dried through evaporation. The drying front remains sharp during the early summer and reaches the bottom of the enriched plough layer in the middle of June, during a critical stage in spring cereals (Elonen andKara 1972, Saarela et al 2000). Each additional centimetre in the depth of the clay soil enriched with P prolongs the supply of P from the surface soil by about one day during the dry periods common in Finland during early summer.…”

“…In the following the effects of irrigation in these two cases will be examined. In addition to the present study the discussion is based on the study of Elonen and Kara (1972), in which irrigation results affecting the grain quality on the same farm in different years proved very varied. The earlier investigations of Elonen et ai.…”

“…Unless the dry season in July is exceptionally dry, the mean grain weight may approximate the weight of the grains irrigated (Elonen et ai. 1967 b, Elonen andKara 1972).…”
