Spring water quality and discharge assessment in the Basantar watershed of Jammu Himalaya using geographic information system (GIS) and water quality Index(WQI)

Abstract: The demand for fresh spring water recently increased due to intensive domestic, industrial irrigation practices which typically caused depletion of water resources and deterioration of water quality. The spring water quality was analyzed for its major hydrochemistry and hydrochemical evolution of the spring water in the study area. A total of 60 spring water samples were collected from the three kinds of terrain (mountainous, hilly and plain) and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved s… Show more

“…3a) obtained by using the ALOS PALSAR DEM is grouped into seven categories i.e. nearly level (0-1%), very gentle (1-3%), gentle (3-5%), moderate (5-10%), steep (10-15%), moderately steep (15-35%) and very steep (>35%) (Jasrotia et al, 2019;Taloor et al, 2020). The first two categories in the classification are suitable for vegetation and civi-lization growth.…”

“…However, the disproportionate amount of some water quality parameters and microorganisms can harm water quality as well as cause problems for the health of fauna, flora and human beings (Çetiṅkaya, 2003;Achieng et al, 2014;Nagamani et al, 2015). Besides, water scarcity has become an unpleasant reality in many parts of the world (Taloor et al, 2020). In Turkey, annual per capita water amount is 1519 m 3 /year.…”

“…In this regard, the availability of relevant data for multiple facets of drought characterization may be a hindrance; however, the application of remote sensing can be useful in obtaining some of the essential input data, which may not be available in field at desirable resolutions. With the advancements in technology, remotely sensed datasets are providing high-resolution information, particularly on physiographic factors (Guptha et al 2021;Jasrotia et al 2013Jasrotia et al , 2016Jasrotia et al , 2019Khan et al 2020;Sarkar et al 2020;Taloor et al 2020Taloor et al , 2021. Further, GIS can conveniently overlay various information into a single platform to quantify the geospatial drought vulnerability.…”
