Spring Dead Spot of Buffalograss Caused by Ophiosphaerella herpotricha in Kansas and Oklahoma

Abstract: Buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) is widely planted in the Great Plains region of the United States as an amenity turfgrass. In May 1993, we observed circular dead spots in buffalograss lawns that were resuming growth following winter dormancy. The dead spots, 12 to 40 cm in diameter, were slowly filled in by buffalograss during the summer but reappeared in the same locations the following spring. Roots and stolons at the patch margins were colonized by darkly pigmented, ectotrophic fungal hyphae. Ophiosphaer… Show more

“…Because SDS has been reported on zoysiagrass and buffalograss, it was likely that the fungi would colonize these turf‐type grasses and that the fungi caused symptoms of disease in the presence of environmentally or maintenance‐induced stresses (Green, 1993; Tisserat et al, 1999; Tredway and Butler, 2007). Even though there was colonization of the turf‐type grasses evaluated in this study, symptoms of necrosis were minimal when compared with susceptible bermudagrass cultivars, which generally exhibit necrosis quickly, often within 4 DPI (Caasi et al, 2010; Flores et al, 2015).…”

“…can cause SDS on zoysiagrass ( Zoysia japonica Steud.) (Green, 1993; Tredway and Butler, 2007) and buffalograss ( Buchloe dactyloides ) (Tisserat et al, 1999). Ophiosphaerella korrae is also the causal agent of necrotic ring spot of cool‐season grasses, including Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.) (Worf et al, 1986), creeping red fescue ( Festuca rubra L. subsp, rubra Smith) (Dernoeden et al, 1995), and annual bluegrass ( Poa annua L.) (Landschoot, 1996).…”
