Spread Patterns of Antibiotic Resistance in Faecal Indicator Bacteria Contaminating an Urbanized Section of the Brda River

Abstract: This paper presents the spatio-temporal distribution of faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in the river section subject to anthropogenic stress and describes spread patterns of antibiotic resistance in the studied bacterial groups. The analysis involved 58 strains of Escherichia coli and 61 strains of enterococci. Antibiotic resistance profiles were prepared in accordance with the recommendations of the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). The results indicated a correlation betwee… Show more

“…In addition to poor availability and access to toilets, drinking water infrastructure in most schools in Taabo was either not available or inadequate. This was confirmed by drinking water samples: four out of five samples from wells, hand-pumps, pots, and storage tanks were contaminated with E. coli, which is an indicator of faecal contamination [35,36]. Apart from schools, poor sanitation infrastructure and drinking water sources were reported in households of the study area by Schmidlin et al [19].…”

“…The 2021 bathing season was exceptional in regard to the spring heavy rains and summer huge floods [ 32 ]. Fecal indicator concentration and AR tend to increase during precipitations, with greater concentrations occurring at higher rainfall intensity [ 33 , 34 ]. Thus, the E. coli levels observed during the 2021 bathing monitoring were three to ten times higher than in 2020 (ISSeP, unpublished data).…”

“…The Brda River is a very popular and valuable landscape canoe trail in northern Poland. The last stretch of the river cuts through the city of Bydgoszcz (population of 350,000) and has numerous recreational and tourist functions [20]. In the northeastern part of the city, the Brda joins the Vistula, the longest river in Poland, which flows into the Baltic Sea.…”
