Spread F – an old equatorial aeronomy problem finally resolved?

Abstract: Abstract. One of the oldest scientific topics in EquatorialAeronomy is related to Spread-F. It includes all our efforts to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the existence of ionospheric F-region irregularities, the spread of the traces in a night-time equatorial ionogram -hence its name -and all other manifestations of the same. It was observed for the first time as an abnormal ionogram in Huancayo, about 70 years ago. But only recently are we coming to understand the physical mechanisms respo… Show more

“…Another aspect to be mentioned is that the irregular structures detected by the probe and below 300 km do not appear in the ionograms. As noted by Woodman (2009), valley-type irregularities do not produce significant spread traces in ionograms. Additionally, after a careful inspection of ionograms in Fig.…”

“…Saito et al, 1998;Hysell et al, 2009). Ionospheric irregularities with scale sizes as short as a few cm have been observed during ESF (Woodman, 2009). ESF irregularities are, in general, first observed in the bottomside equatorial F region, then develop vertically reaching altitudes that can exceed 1000 km.…”

“…Secara amnya, gangguan berbentuk seakan gelombang pada bawah permukaan lapisan ionosfera telah diterima sebagai punca pembentukan PBB yang paling munasabah. Gangguan seakan gelombang tersebut berpunca daripada perolakan gelombang graviti di dalam atmosfera (AGW) yang seterusnya membentuk struktur gelombang berskala besar (LSWS) di bawah lapisan ionosfera (Tsunoda 2015;Woodman 2009). …”
