Spray‐free polypropylene composites reinforced by coupling agent treated jute fiber

The present investigation aimed to produce ecological composites of biopolyethylene (BioPE) with macaíba shell (MS), using polyethylene‐graft‐maleic anhydride (PE‐g‐MA) and polyethylene‐graft‐acrylic acid (PE‐g‐AA) as compatibilizers, as well as macaíba almond oil as a plasticizing agent. The composites were processed in a co‐rotational twin‐screw extruder and injection molded. The addition of 30% by weight of MS in the BioPE matrix caused a reduction in impact strength and elongation at break, but improved stiffness and heat deflection temperature. The PE‐g‐MA and PE‐g‐AA compatibilizers improved the impact strength of the composites, suggesting increased interactions between the phases. There was an increase in the composites degree of crystallinity, indicating that the MS acted as a nucleating agent. The macaíba oil addition to the composites increased the impact strength, indicating a plasticizing effect. However, the elastic modulus, tensile strength, and degree of crystallinity tended to decrease. In general, the use of PE‐g‐MA compatibilizer was more effective to improve the composites mechanical properties. The reuse of MS is feasible for the production of sustainable composites.

To attain interface-engineered polypropylene/cellulose nanofibril (PP/CNF) composites with improved thermal and mechanical performance, PP was grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and styrene via direct melt-mixing and GMA/styrene-grafted PP (PGMA) was reinforced with 1-10 wt% CNF content through a mass-producible melt-compounding process. The spectroscopic analyses confirmed the existence of specific hydrogen-bonding interactions between CNF and PGMA in the composites. The melt-rheological measurement revealed the occurrence of chemical reactions between the hydroxy group of CNF and the glycidyl group of PGMA of the composites. Accordingly, the dispersion and interfacial adhesion of CNF in the PGMA matrix was improved. β-form PP crystals were also developed by accelerating the crystallization of PGMA and PGMA/CNF composites, unlike PP with only α-form crystals. The storage modulus of PGMA/CNF composites was enhanced noticeably with increasing CNF content. Moreover, the impact strength of PGMA composite with 1 wt% CNF was found to be 29.2% higher than that of neat PP.

Effect of large sized reed fillers on properties and degradability of PBAT composites

In this paper, large‐size reeds were introduced into PBAT to prepare high‐performance biodegradable composites by high‐speed blending without compatibilizer. Subsequently, the effects of large‐size reeds on the composite properties and biodegradation behavior were further investigated. The length of the reed in composites reaches to ~1.88 mm. It was found that all composites showed larger modulus and flexural strength than PBAT, and a significant increase in heat deflection temperature. By mixing 60% reed and PBAT, the bending strength, bending modulus, and heat deflection temperature reached 23.9 ± 0.4 MPa, 1237 ± 143 MPa, and 71.8°C, respectively. Biodegradation tests showed that the primary bond‐breaking site of PBAT was the C=O group. Compared with pure PBAT, the composites exhibited more significant mass loss, decreased thermal stability, increased melting point, and decreased crystallinity during degradation. A surface erosion degradation model for the composites was proposed. The research provides a scientific basis for applying high‐performance biodegradable composites to biodegradable blister and injection molded products.
