Pharmacists are competent to promote the proper use of medicines. According to the International Pharmaceutical Federation, pharmacists must develop competence in sports pharmacy and the contents of the World Anti-Doping Agency code. This explorative study aimed to identify the status of sports pharmacy in pharmacy education in Norway and competence in sports pharmacy among Norwegian pharmacy students. The study curricula of pharmacy education were examined for the content of sports pharmacy. An online questionnaire was also developed and distributed among pharmacy students. The anonymous survey collected demographic information and data on competence in sports pharmacy. Data from 122 participants were analyzed. Only 22.5% of pharmacy students had acquired a form of training in sports pharmacy and 91.7% wished to gain higher competence. In total, 40.2% of respondents were uncomfortable in advising athletes and trainers on medication use in sports. Study year was found to correlate with competence level with a significant difference between the 3rd year (bachelor) and 5th year (master) students. Age, institution, and number of years engaged in sports were not associated with competence level. The inclusion of sports pharmacy in pharmacy programs holds practical relevance for enhancing competency levels. This implementation can be realized through the integration of sports pharmacy modules and/or the incorporation of research-based activities.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the awareness of the volunteer pharmacy workforce of medication use and their satisfaction with the pharmacy services of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games from a pharmacist’s perspective.MethodsA questionnaire was developed from related articles in published peer-reviewed journals and modified prior to distribution to the whole population of pharmacists serving at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Validity tests were conducted based on expert opinions and Cronbach’s alpha (0.79). The questionnaire consisted of demographics (11 questions), knowledge of medication use in sports (8 questions) and satisfaction on the provision of the service (5 questions). Responses using a 5-point-Likert scale, from strongly agree (5) to strongly disagree (1), and two free text questions were analysed with descriptive statistics.ResultsThe response rate was 86% (n=32/37). Overall, the pharmacists reported a high awareness of medication use. Specifically, questions on the prohibited list of medications (mean 4.0±SD 0.7), COVID-19 policy (3.8±0.9), use of alternative non-prohibited medications (3.6±1.0) and therapeutic use exemptions (3.5±0.9). Moreover, they rated high satisfaction with the pharmacy service they provided. However, rates were ≤3 for knowledge of the International Olympic Committee Needle Policy (2.6±1.0), Medication Importation Declaration (2.9±1.0) and communication skills (3.0±1.0).ConclusionPharmacists were confident and satisfied with the pharmacy service at the games. The study confirms the importance of prior training and education. Game-specific policies and strategies to improve communication skills should be included in the pharmacy education for future Games.

Previous studies published on past Olympic and Paralympic Games have reported the role of pharmacists within different disciplines of healthcare services; however, emphasis on their clinical pharmacy services was limited. Furthermore, only a few studies have addressed pharmacists' involvement in sports, with the majority focusing on the organizational and managerial aspects of pharmacies. Sports and other pharmacists are well‐positioned to advise athletes and other healthcare professionals on how to promote and maintain health. Pharmacists should be properly trained in sports medicine. To illustrate this point, this review analyzes pharmacy services at polyclinics and medical stations in the athletes' villages at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and shares examples of clinical interventions performed by pharmacists. This review also examines the level of satisfaction with their work and educational programs prior to the games. These results show that despite coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19)‐related complications in the Tokyo 2020 Games, pharmacists appropriately managed infection control, provided anti‐doping‐based pharmacy services, and implemented clinical interventions. As one of intervention results, 268 inquiries from pharmacists to physicians regarding prescriptions were recorded. Among the most common inquiries regarding prescriptions 89 resulted in changes in quantity and 76 resulted in changes in usage. Simultaneously, the questionnaire administered to the volunteer pharmacists showed a high level of satisfaction with their participation as healthcare professionals and with the pre‐Game training, as well as with their gained knowledge. Furthermore, the need for further extensive training related to rules specific to the Olympic and Paralympic Games was identified. We hope that this review will be useful to future pharmacists pursuing expertise in sports.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
