In view of global health concerns about elevated levels of inactivity and related disease patterns of citizens, policy reform in physical education and school sport (PESS) is seen as a basic human right and tool for societal transformation. Although literature supports the importance of quality PESS for different aspects of learners’ development, various implementation challenges facing school sports in South Africa have been reported. Drawing on a nationwide research project, this paper seeks to provide empirical insights into the role and status of school sport. Addressing the question, Sport participation in South African schools. Have we lost the plot? This study adopted a blend of self-determination theory (SDT) and social justice theoretical frameworks to understand how educators’ livid experiences impact their personal and social responsibility to teach, enhance, and facilitate PESS to a diverse group of learners in a diversity of schools. Results indicated that school sport is exceptionally varied, multifaceted, and complex, with different pressures and imperatives. It is exacerbated by educators who are required to assume the dual role in schools within a pressurized school environment, which results in overload, emotional rollercoaster rides, and a lack of motivation. Without meaningful motivation, continuous reform, or the revision of policy, the delivery of PESS will remain unachievable.

Este estudio contribuye al avance del campo de la investigación sobre el deporte para el desarrollo y la paz (DDP) en América Latina y Caribe (ALC). Todavía existen pocos estudios sobre los programas de DDP en esta región y es importante documentar y comprender los impactos de estos programas en los participantes. El presente estudio es el resultado de una investigación colaborativa que tiene como objetivo describir las experiencias y percepciones (1. Describir cómo funciona el programa DDP y 2. Entender y documentar los efectos percibidos del programa DDP) de jóvenes colombianos que participaron en un programa de DDP que los llevo de un club deportivo local hasta los Juegos Olímpicos. Se realizaron 7 entrevistas semiestructuradas a actores clave (administradores, entrenadores y deportistas) que participaron en un programa de formación triple y transversal (local, distrital y nacional) de marcha olímpica desde una comunidad de Bogotá hasta los Juegos Olímpicos. Los resultados permitieron comprender mejor la coordinación, organización e implicación de la comunidad local de Ciudad Bolívar, el Instituto Distrital de Recreación y Deporte y Coldeportes. Las entrevistas mostraron los efectos percibidos por los actores a corto y largo plazo del proceso en su desarrollo, educación, salud y carrera profesional. Se formulan recomendaciones para las organizaciones oficiales de DDP en ALC. Futuros estudios deberían continuar investigando la iniciativa de DDP en ALC para entender cómo el deporte puede ayudar al desarrollo y a la construcción de la paz en esta región.

This study contributes to the advancement of the field of Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) research in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). There are still few studies on SDP programs in this region and it is important to document and understand the impacts of these programs on participants. The present study is the result of a collaborative research that aims to describe the experiences and perceptions of Colombian youth and program managers who participated in an SDP program that took them from a local community sports club to the Olympic Games. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with key actors (administrators, coaches, and athletes) who participated in a triple and transversal (local, district and national) Olympic walking training program. The results provided a better understanding of the program dynamics in the local, regional, and national level, as well as of the short- and long-term effects perceived by the actors of the process on their development, education, health, and career. Recommendations are made for SDP organizations in LAC. Future studies should continue to investigate the SDP initiative in LAC to understand how sport can help development and peace building in this region.
