Sport and Commercial Fishing Allocations for the Atlantic Salmon Fisheries of the Miramichi River

Abstract: The Atlantic salmon has been harvested by both commercial and recreationalfishers for many years on the river systems of the province of New Brunswick on Canada 's Atlantic coast. The commercialfisheries were closed and controls were placed on the recreational fisheries following the 1983 collapse of the salmon stocks. This management policy remains in effect. A preliminary analysis using a linear control model showed this to be an economically efJicient harvest allocation policy on New Brunswick's Miramichi R… Show more

“…Consistent with the results of findings by Cook and McGaw (1996), the coefficient of current fishing catch level CC is positive but unlike the above study is not significant. On the other hand, EC is both positive and significant.…”

“…The tobit analysis indicates that the relationship between the number of fishing trips FT and NWTP to increase fishing catch is positive and not significantly different from zero. The sign of the coefficient is similar to the results obtained by Cook and McGaw (1996) on number of rod-days fished and recreational fishing value for Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi river, New Brunswick, Canada. In contrast, Johnson et al (1995) found a negative linkage between consumer surplus and the number of days fished which was not significant.…”

“…Earlier studies addressing harvest allocation between different user groups targeting a migratory species have collapsed the stock dynamics into simple biomass models (Charles and Reed, 1985;Cook and McGaw, 1996;Laukkanen, 2001). Economic analyses accounting for uncertainty have also generally resorted to such models (Reed 1974(Reed , 1978(Reed , 1979Clark andKirkwood, 1986, Sethi et al, 2005).…”

“…The only consequence of higher number of recreational fishermen is lower CPUE per one angler, but the overall catch remains the same. Therefore, contrary to the situations where they are not in balance (Marengo et al, 2015), medium-intensive artisanal fisheries can co-exist with recreational fisheries (Cook and McGow, 1996;Wo os and Trella, 2015). These findings are supported by other authors (e.g.…”
