Sporotrichoid Lymphangitis Due to Group AStreptococcus

Abstract: We describe what is, to our knowledge, the first case of sporotrichoid lymphangitis caused solely by group A Streptococcus in an otherwise healthy patient. Infection with pyogenic pathogens, such as streptococci and staphylococci, as well as with the most common causes of sporotrichoid lymphangitis (i.e., Sporothrix schenkii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Mycobacterium marinum, and Leishmania species) should be considered in differential diagnosis for some patients.

“…Pyogenic sporotrichoid lymphangitis is very rare, with only four cases reported in literature 2–4 . Of these, Streptococcus pyogenes was the sole causative agent in only one patient 4 . Although the determination of the causative agent can be difficult on clinical evaluation, important clues to the aetiology include patients’ travel history, geographical area, contacts (human and animal), immune status, occupation and history of trauma, and illicit or recreational drug abuse.…”
