Sporadic re-emergence of enzootic porcine transmissible gastroenteritis in Hungary

Abstract: Transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) is a coronavirus-induced disease of pigs, characterised by diarrhoea and vomiting. The incidence of the disease had been decreasing since the late 1980s when deletion mutant variants (porcine respiratory coronavirus, PRCoV) of the virus emerged, repressing TGE gradually. Although disease manifestations are infrequent, the virus is still present in pig herds, causing sporadic outbreaks in a milder form. Identification and characterisation of the spike genes from TGEV and PRCo… Show more

“…Surprisingly, PEDV was not found in any samples, as opposed to what has been assumed after the reappearance of the virus in the country in 2016 (Valkó et al, 2017). The case was similar with TGEV, which was detected for the last time in Hungary in 2013 (Lőrincz et al, 2014), although the absence of this coronavirus may be explained by the cross-protection provided by antibodies produced against PRCV. The absence of these coronaviruses is similar to that found in a Slovakian study, where neither PEDV nor TGEV was detected from 411 rectal swabs collected between the years 2013 and 2016 (Salamunova et al, 2018).…”

“…However, TGEV has been already detected in neighbouring countries. TGEV is present in Hungary and causes sporadic outbreaks in pig herds [ 27 ]. Antibodies against TGEV have also been found in wild boars in Czech Republic [ 28 ].…”

“…The virus neutralization assay cannot be used to differentiate TGEV and PRCV, therefore various enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were developed using monoclonal antibodies targeting the different epitopes of the S protein (Carman et al, 2002). Serological tests such as these can be used to monitor herd status or newly transported animals, as TGEV/PRCV-seronegative farms are at risk of the disease, although TGE outbreaks occurred only sporadically since the appearance of PRCV (Lőrincz, Biksi, Andersson, Cságola, & Tuboly, 2013).…”
