Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Without Scalar Mesons

Abstract: By combining the ideas of Nambu in his study of superconductivity and of Johnson, Baker, and Willey in their approach to electrodynamics we construct a gauge theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking which is free of elementary spin-zero fields. The theory contains two fermions and two vector mesons, one of which acquires a mass via the Higgs mechanism. A formula for this vector-meson mass is derived which becomes exact, and nonzero, in the limit as the strength of interaction is appropriately scaled to zero. Th… Show more

“…On R 4 , however, the theory is strongly coupled. The common wisdom of strongly coupled gauge theories tells us that a condensate will form in the most attractive channel (MAC) [35,36]. In this case, the condensate trλλ breaking the discrete chiral symmetry Z 2N → Z 2 , possess a nonzero phase equal to an integer multiple of 2π/N .…”

“…The fact that only the longitudinally-coupled form factors are allowed to contain pole parts is dictated by the physical requirement that they should act like 'dynamical Nambu-Goldstone bosons', and decouple from physical observables [57][58][59][60][61][62][63].…”

“…(12) we have kept terms only up to the AE 4 term that comes from the two-loop contribution. Note that expanding the logarithmic term the AE 2 contribution is absent, which is a consequence of the fact that AE obeys the linear homogeneous SDE for the fermion propagator [10,15]. We parametrize the self-energy AE as [4]…”
