Spontaneous Splenic Rupture Caused byBabesia microtiInfection

Abstract: Babesiosis has not been previously associated with spontaneous splenic rupture. We describe an otherwise healthy 61-year-old man with symptomatic babesiosis whose spleen ruptured during hospitalization. Although this complication is rare, practitioners who commonly treat patients with babesiosis should be aware of its potential occurrence.

“…Patients who are elderly, IC, or asplenic will experience similar symptoms but with increased severity. An isolated case of splenic rupture due to a B. microti infection has also been reported (340). In ICT patients, Babesia infections can persist for many months, even if treatment has been initiated (335,574).…”

“…CT scans demonstrated splenic laceration in both patients, and they subsequently underwent emergent splenectomy due to worsening hemodynamic instability. Parasite count was noted to be 5% for the 61 year-old male, and not reported for the other[2,3]. In comparison to the two patients requiring operative invention, our patient had a slightly lower parasite count and received platelet transfusions.…”

“…In reviewing the literature we found 11 cases with this complication. Table 3 summarizes these cases [40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]. Accordingly, we conclude that babesiosis can cause splenic rupture, just like malaria which is a well-documented cause of this pathology.…”
