Spontaneous rupture of the renal pelvis caused by upper urinary tract obstruction

Abstract: Rationale:Spontaneous renal rupture is rupture of the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or renal blood vessel, which often occurs in pathological kidney and is clinically less common. Postoperative long-term renal rupture is rarely reported in flexible ureteroscopy treatment of calculus in the upper urinary tract.Patient concerns:A 58-year-old man complained of right lower abdominal pain with hematuria for 3 hours after flexible ureteroscopy, combined with holmium laser lithotripsy of right renal calculi wa… Show more

“…The proposed mechanism of renal pelvic rupture is a sudden increase in intrapelvic pressure (Csata et al, 1998), and affected kidneys are frequently previously diseased (Caro & Waldbarum 1976, Van Winter et al 1991. In this case, renal pelvic rupture was thought to have occurred secondary to ureterolithiasis, as described in humans (Battista et al 2016, Zhang et al 2017.…”

“…The rupture site is the fornix, followed by the upper ureter, when pressure exceeds a critical level reported to be from 20-75 mmHg[ 1 ]. The common causes are obstruction (urinary stones[ 2 - 4 ], third trimester of pregnancy[ 5 , 6 ], and papillary necrosis) and urinary retention[ 7 ]. Urinary stones are the most common cause of renal pelvis rupture[ 8 ].…”

“…In addition, while the moderate ascites that recurred 3 days after the right nephrectomy could be attributed to the spontaneous rupture of the left kidney; this could not be confirmed because the owner refused further examinations of the cat. If the presence of a lymphoplasmacytic inflammation in the kidney had been confirmed, we could have improved the cat's condition or prolonged its life with dietary modification (e.g., hypoallergenic diet) and the administration of high-dose corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs (Willard 2003;Zaid et al 2011;Zhang et al 2017).…”

“…A spontaneous renal rupture is defined as the rupture of the renal parenchyma due to the renal pathology (Zhang et al 2017). Possibly reflecting the dysregulation of the immune system, a lympho-Hydronephrosis refers to the dilatation of the renal pelvis and calyces due to a renal or postrenal urinary obstruction that induces the progressive atrophy of the renal parenchyma (Rawlings et al 2003).…”
