Spontaneous rupture of a large non-parasitic liver cyst: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionNon-parasitic hepatic cysts are benign entities, occur rarely (5% of the population), and in the majority of cases, are asymptomatic. Cysts can cause symptoms when they become large and produce bile duct compression or portal hypertension, and also when complications such as rupture, infection or hemorrhage take place.Case presentationWe present the case of a 70-year-old Greek-Caucasian man with a large, asymptomatic and non-parasitic liver cyst that presented as an acute surgical abdominal emergen… Show more

“…Treatment consists of percutaneous drainage of ascites and liver cysts or surgical intervention. 56,58 Liver volume-related complications Complications resulting from pressure on adjacent organs by a single cyst or by the enlarged liver are rare, but may be severe depending on the location. The incidence of such complications is unknown.…”

“…In our computerized search of English-language reports of NLC rupture published from 1959 to 2013, we identified only 17 publications describing NLC rupture (Table 3 ) [ 3 – 19 ]. The causes of NLC rupture are variable and include infection, trauma, iatrogenic injury, and spontaneity [ 11 , 16 , 20 ]. In the current report, we presented a case of the second rupture without a specific cause such as infection or trauma after previous conservative treatment.…”

“…Complete cyst excision and partial hepatectomy have been performed in some cases because of concern regarding malignancy. However, these operations are highly invasive and almost unacceptable for benign diseases despite the fact that the reported recurrence rate is 0 % [ 11 , 25 ]. Therefore, in the present case, we performed emergent laparotomy, cyst fenestration, argon beam coagulation of the remaining cyst wall, and placement of an omental transposition flap.…”

“…However, since our patient had no previous history of trauma or other episodes leading to mechanical injury to the cyst, the rupture was spontaneous [2,7,8]. This complication of hepatic cysts is a rare occurrence [1,2].…”

“…But some cysts may slowly enlarge and occasionally become symptomatic due to mass effect, rupture, hemorrhage, or infection [1]. Spontaneous rupture of a simple hepatic cyst is a rare occurrence [1,2], and the clinical course after rupture is not fully known. We report a case of a huge hepatic cyst which rapidly regrew after spontaneous rupture.…”
