Spontaneous Renal Rupture Treated by Transcatheter Arterial Embolization: A Case Report

Abstract: We describe our experience with a case of spontaneous renal rupture. A 43-year-old man visited our hospital with a chief complaint of left back pain with no identifiable triggering factors. A CT scan showed a rupture involving the left renal parenchyma and hematoma around the kidney. However, there were no apparent causes of the renal rupture, such as tumors and vascular lesions. Based on these findings, he was diagnosed with spontaneous renal rupture. Due to progression of anemia during the course, he underwe… Show more

“…Spontaneous renal rupture usually occurs after upper urinary calculi-related operation treatment or renal tumor, [ 2 , 4 ] it has also been reported during pregnancy, [ 5 ] transplant kidney and nephritis. [ 6 , 7 ] According to the location of renal rupture, it can be divided into renal parenchyma rupture, collecting system rupture or mixed rupture, [ 1 ] patient may experience corresponding symptoms, such as pain, hematuresis and Wunderlich syndrome. [ 7 ] The patient did not have any obstruction and tumor, but this patient has a compensatorily enlarged left kidney due to the atrophy of the right kidney, this left kidney may be relatively fragile, more importantly, the patient has hemophilia, which is a bleeding-prone disease for the lack of clotting factor.…”

“…Spontaneous renal rupture is a rare urologic emergency defined as a rupture of the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or renal vessels (1). Since there is no history of trauma in cases of spontaneous renal rupture, there is usually an underlying renal disease, the leading causes of which are malignancy and vascular smooth muscle lipoma (2,3).…”

“…Spontaneous rupture of the kidney is a rare but clinically critical event (1). According to its location, spontaneous rupture of the kidney may be categorized as renal parenchyma rupture, renal collecting system rupture or mixed rupture (2). Spontaneous rupture of the renal parenchyma is uncommon and its incidence is lower compared with that of renal pelvis rupture (3).…”
