“…The finding of a low proportion of CD23+ cells being correlated with a high absolute lymphocyte count may be due to the pool of circulating lymphocytes being composed of differing proportions of normal and malignant cell subpopulations, with differences in this ratio in the early and advanced stages of the disease. In the initial phases of B-CLL, characterized using the classical criteria (Rai system) with a normal or moderately increased B lymphocyte count, most circulating cell subpopulations remain undisturbed [4,37]. Thus when the Binet A B-CLL patients were analysed, we found a relatively high percentage of CD23 membrane molecule expression and low PBLs [12,15,21], though there were no significant differences between the individual patients within the group.…”

“…The occurrence of a spontaneous regression in CLL, defined as the achievement of a clinical remission of the disease in the absence of any previous treatment (Ribera et al , 1987; Bernard et al , 1999; Gomez Garcia et al , 2002; Thomas et al , 2002; Upshaw & Callihan, 2002), although recognized since the 1970s (Han & Sokal, 1971; Wiernik, 1976), is rarely described in the literature (Ribera et al , 1987; Bernard et al , 1999; Gomez Garcia et al , 2002; Thomas et al , 2002; Upshaw & Callihan, 2002). A recent report described nine CLL cases with a spontaneous regression of the disease over an 11‐year follow‐up, in which the CLL clone was still immunophenotypically evident in the circulating lymphocyte population (Del Giudice et al , 2009).…”

“…Twelve cases of spontaneous remission in CLL have been reported in the literature since 1970 (Schmidt et al , 1995; Bernard et al , 1999). Most of these cases showed a significant decrease in the blood lymphocyte count and, in a few cases, this was associated with blood or bone marrow remission.…”
