Spontaneous Fluctuations of Electrical Skin Conductance and the Actual Clinical State in Schizophrenics

Abstract: The present paper examines in a group of 48 schizophrenics, whether spontaneous fluctuations (SF) in electrical skin conductance show a relationship to psychiatric symptomatology. Subjects participated in an experiment that delivered nonsignal auditory stimuli. Their clinical state was assessed by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Nurses’ Observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE). An additional set of factors with a possible influence on SF rates was also taken into account. A stepwise… Show more

“…No directional hypotheses were made regarding the Thought Disturbance and the Anxiety/Depression factors because of the lack of clear rationale and prior results. Moreover, given the positive relationships between SCORs and tonic electrodermal activity and the previous findings of Olbrich and Mussgay (1987), the same predictions made for SCORs also were made for nonspecific SCRs.…”

“…Gruzelier (1976) obtained somewhat similar results based on ward nurses' ratings, with the SCOR responders rated as more manic, anxious, assaultive, and attention-demanding. Olbrich and Mussgay (1987) examined the relationships between BPRS symptoms and the frequency of nonspecific SCRs, which generally are positively correlated with SCORs, and found a significant positive correlation with the BPRS factor Activation. Taken as a whole, the pattern of results across studies suggests the existence of a continuum of behavioral/emotional intensity, with the SCOR responders on the high end of the continuum and SCOR nonresponders on the low end.…”

“…In line with other reports [Olbrich and Mussgay, 1987] there appeared to be no effect of medication dosage on electrodermal activity.…”

“…He found that the number of trials to habituation in a series of 12 tones (1 kHz, 78 dB) significantly increased in schizophrenics from a state of remission to a state of relapse. Olbrich (1990) could not find statistically significant differences in various EDA parameters, including tonic measures, initial SC-OR amp., and trials to habituation, 243 comparing data from 11 242 In a pilot study with few participants, Hazlett, Dawson, Buchsbaum, and Nuechterlein (1993) found that EDA nonresponders had significantly lower metabolic rates in medial frontal areas, in the hippocampus, and in the amygdala, i.e., in areas that are suggested being involved in generating EDA (Sect. 1.3.4.1).…”
