Spontaneous Ferroelectric Order in a Bent-Core Smectic Liquid Crystal of Fluid Orthorhombic Layers

Abstract: Macroscopic polarization density, characteristic of ferroelectric phases, is stabilized by dipolar intermolecular interactions. These are weakened as materials become more fluid and of higher symmetry, limiting ferroelectricity to crystals and to smectic liquid crystal stackings of fluid layers. We report the SmAP(F), the smectic of fluid polar orthorhombic layers that order into a three-dimensional ferroelectric state, the highest-symmetry layered ferroelectric possible and the highest-symmetry ferroelectric … Show more

“…In addition to the antiferroelectric Sm-AP A phase, several different polar biaxial phases such as macroscopically uniaxial Sm-AP R [17] and Sm-AP AR [18], and biaxial ferroelectric Sm-AP F [19], all in their ground states, were discovered. The common characteristic of these three phases is that they are nontilted (Sm-A-like) and possess long-range or shortrange order of the in-layer polarizations in smectic layers.…”

“…From an application point-of-view, a number of bent-core liquid crystals have been synthesized to exhibit the SmAPF phase: the first experimental evidence for the existence of a spontaneous ferroelectric phase with orthorhombic layers was given by Reddy et al in 2011 [20]. Recently, an optical phase modulator based on the SmAPF phase has been demonstrated [21], where the applied electric field couples to the polarization and changes the effective birefringence without affecting the director orientation.…”

“…Recently proper antiferro- [8][9][10][11][12] and ferro-electric [13] ordering has finally been discovered in orthogonal smectic phases composed of nonchiral bent-core molecules. Orthogonal bent-core smectics are the only proper fluid ferroelectrics completely confirmed experimentally so far.…”
