Spontaneous CP violation and horizontal symmetry in the MSSM: toward lepton flavor naturalness

Abstract: We study the contributions of supersymmetric models with a U(1) horizontal symmetry and only spontaneous CP breaking to various lepton flavor observables, such as μ → eγ and the electron electric dipole moment. We show that both a horizontal symmetry and a lack of explicit CP violation can alleviate the existing bounds from such observables. The undetermined $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (1) coefficients in such mass matrix models muddle the interpretation of the bounds from various fla… Show more

“…The constraining power of EDMs has stimulated a lot of different analyses in various UV completions of the SM. There are several studies of the electron and/or neutron EDMs in SUSY models [15][16][17][18], in Composite Higgs models [19][20][21], in Leptoquark models [22][23][24][25], in complex two-Higgs and three-Higgs doublet models [26][27][28][29][30] and in scotogenic models [31]. On the model independent side, [32] provides an analysis of the electron EDM including some contributions that arise at two-loop and at dimension-8 level, while [33] studies the neutron EDM in presence of an effective CP violating Higgs-gluon interaction encoded by a dimension-6 SMEFT operator and [34] analyzes the contribution to the neutron EDM induced by chromo-dipoles of second and third generation quarks.…”

“…In such models a phenomenon of alignment, in which the quark mass matrices and squark mass-squared matrices are approximately diagonal in the same basis, can suppress flavor-changing neutral currents [117]. It is possible that CP is a fundamental symmetry spontaneously broken only by fields with horizontal charge, which can suppress EDMs [119]; this was recently discussed in the lepton sector in [21,120].…”
