Spontaneous 19-year regression of oat cell carcinoma with scalene node metastasis

Abstract: This is the first case report of a patient with oat cell carcinoma of the lung with scalene node metastasis who, without treatment, is alive 19 years after the original diagnosis was made by biopsy. Seven years before the publication of this report, and at the age of 66 years, he underwent coronary bypass surgery and there was no gross evidence of malignancy present.

“…Only one case of lung cancer was referred to of the 176 cases reported by Cole [1]. To our knowledge, only 27 cases with SR of lung cancer had previously described and, especially, only eight cases with SR of SCLC including the present case had been reported in the literatures till now (Table 1) [6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…Despite its incidence in a variety of malignant diseases, spontaneous regression in lung cancer is considered to be a particularly rare event (1,2,8,9). Everson and Cole (2) reported only two cases, whereas Lowy and Erickson had only found four previous cases in the medical literature when they reported an additional case of spontaneous regression in a patient with metastatic small-cell lung cancer in 1986 (10).…”

“…A review of the literature shows only three previous cases demonstrating a spontaneous regression of SCLC. [5][6][7] The mechanism of spontaneous regression remains an enigma. However, it is hypothesized that a non-specific or specific stimulation of the immune system may have caused the regression of cancer in these cases.…”
