Sponge beta diversity in the Spermonde Archipelago, SW Sulawesi, Indonesia

Abstract: Sponge assemblages were investigated in the Spermonde Archipelago, southwestern Sulawesi, Indonesia. In this study spatial patterns of sponge similarity among sites were significantly related to remotely sensed environmental variables, the degree of human settlement and depth, but not to the distance between sites. Both oviparous and viviparous species groups responded to similar environmental constraints, and differences in similarity were unrelated to the distance between sites. The degree of human settlemen… Show more

“…The modest amount of variation explained by spatial versus environmental variables is an indication that dispersal limitation only plays a minor role in structuring foraminifera assemblages within the study area. Various studies have attributed spatial variation in community structure predominantly to deterministic (environmental) processes (Cleary et al 2004, Williams & Wiser 2004, Cleary & Genner 2006, de Voogd et al 2006. However, most of the variation in composition remained unexplained, as was also the case in the abovementioned studies, which is logical when dealing with diverse assemblages and where the presence of e.g.…”

“…Hooper & Kennedy, 2002;Samaai, 2006;Van Soest et al, 2007a), and an even smaller number of studies have attempted to relate the observed patterns to ecological variables (e.g. de Voogd et al, 2006;de Voogd & Cleary, 2007;Van Soest et al, 2007a).…”

“…Finally, offshore islands (>27 km) are rarely exposed to high levels of terrestrial effluents from the mainland. Benthic communities, sponges, and corals have shown strong on-to-offshore patterns in diversity (Edinger et al, 2000a;Cleary et al, 2005;Becking et al, 2006;de Voogd et al, 2006). Local island human populations rely heavily on nearby coral reefs (Ferse et al, 2014).…”
