Spokespeople

Abstract: This paper presents insights from a collaboration with cycling advocates and local authorities to consider how HCI can open productive spaces for citizens to contribute to the realization of social goals. We worked with members of a walking and cycling advocacy organization to explore the potential for technology-mediated data collection to support advocacy and action taking. Based on our initial findings, we developed and deployed Spokespeople-a system to enable people who cycle to collect, curate and make vi… Show more

“…However, crowdsourcing applied to community engagements often positions participants as data collectors (e.g. reporting issues of local infrastructure [34,50,51,55]), with limited work seeking to involve distributed participants in individual or collective sensemaking.…”

“…The ubiquity of mobile devices and geo-located media has also helped 'bring place into' civic discussions in HCI, for example through studies investigating the collection and use of participatory cycling route data about the built environment [44]. Similarly, 'Spokespeople', a tool which captures 'annotated routes', enables cyclists to augment GPS traces of their journeys with onthe-go audio comments or post-journey textual descriptions for reflection, discussion, and civic discourse [51]. Images have been used to log place-based maintenance issues with civic agencies [14], an approach that has been investigated in the context of wheelchair users [37,66].…”

“…HCI researchers are increasingly engaging in place-based agendas. Interactive systems are built to collect, analyse, or advocate with place-based data, spanning diverse issues such as environmental quality [61], road safety [6,50], urban development [20,37], gentrification [16,51], or police violence [57]. Data frequently concerns issues raised by local activists and communities of place [52,70,75].…”
