Spitz nevi: diverse clinical, dermatoscopic and histopathological features in childhood

Abstract: Pigmented Spitz nevi were more common after 13 years of age. The study confirms other reports regarding the distribution of pigmentation patterns, and underlines the low number of atypical Spitz nevi in pediatric patients as well as their low recurrence rate during long-term follow-up.

“…Atypical Spitz nevi are associated with an irregular distribution of structures and colors. 3 Interestingly, Ghahramani et al reported a case of a 17-monthold girl with atypical Spitz nevus presenting as a dome-shaped red-to-yellow papule and showing the setting sun dermoscopic appearance of JXG. 4 However, vascular structures were polymorphous with scattered dotted, comma-like, and serpentine vessels.…”

“…Fitzpatrick score was assessed by predisposition to burn or tan, and 74.5% of Spitz patients surveyed reported Type I‐III. Meta‐analysis suggests Spitz neoplasms most commonly occur in Caucasians; however, Spitz lesions have traditionally been studied in majority Caucasian cohorts and are thought to be underdiagnosed in Black patients 5‐14,17,18,20‐32 . Some studies have focused on characterizing Spitz lesions in Hispanic and Black patients 10,29 .…”
