Spirulina sp. LEB-18 culture using effluent from the anaerobic digestion

Abstract: -The carbon source is the most expensive nutrient for Spirulina production; effluents from anaerobic digestion contain this nutrient in the form of HCO 3 -. The aim of this study was to assess the growth kinetics, composition and fatty acid profile of Spirulina sp. LEB-18 grown in standard Zarrouk medium (NaHCO 3 16.8 g L -1) and in Zarrouk medium replaced with 20% (v/v) effluent with reduced concentrations of NaHCO 3 (5.3 and 2.8 g L -1 ). The use of effluent and lower concentrations of HCO 3 -was found to be… Show more

“…The final protein content (44.4 ± 6.9% w w À1 ) in the biomass cultivated using MEA (Table 2) was lower than that normally found in Spirulina sp. LEB 18 biomass (60-70% w w À1 ), as reported by Borges et al (2013). Nonetheless, the control assay (60.8 ± 4.0% w w À1 ) remained within this protein concentration range.…”

“…The lipid content of the biomass produced with MEA (8.3 ± 1.4% w w À1 ) and without MEA (10.0 ± 1.2% w w À1 ) was higher than that found by Borges et al (2013) (5.0% w w À1 ) and Morais et al (2009) (3.3% w w À1 ) using the same strain as the present study. These authors cultivated Spirulina in open reactors that, according to Chisti (2007), may lead to lower biomass productivity, but this cannot explain the low lipid levels in relation to the values found in the present experiments.…”
