Spirulina platensis Growth in Open Raceway Ponds Using Fresh Water Supplemented with Carbon, Nitrogen and Metal Ions

Abstract: To investigate the feasibility of using fresh water from Mangueira Lagoon (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) for biomass production in open raceway ponds (0.7 m long, 0.18 m wide, 0.075 m deep) we studied the influence of nutrient addition (carbon as sodium bicarbonate, nitrogen as urea, phosphate, sulfate, ferric iron, magnesium and potassium) on the growth rate of the cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis using a 22 factorial design. In unsupplemented lagoon water production of S. platensis was 0.78 ± 0.01 g/l (dry wei… Show more

“…A. platensis species has the ability to exist and grow in various types of water like seawater [28], freshwater [29], aquaculture wastewater [30], industrial wastewater [31], agriculture wastewater [32], and domestic wastewater [33]. A. platensis is a filamentous, spiral-shaped, blue-green alga that culture in alkaline water, with pH up to 11 [20].…”

“…The higher concentration value was in accordance with those achievable in open ponds and closed PBRs alike prior to harvesting. 47 , 48 Additionally, to evaluate any potential impact of photosynthesis on biogas upgrading, experiments were performed under continuous illumination between 3 and 5 klux (40.5–67.5 μmol m –2 s –1 ) (similar to those used for Spirulina cultivation). For ease of following the paper, from this point forward, all low-algal-concentration experiments will be denoted as LON and all those with high algal concentrations will be denoted as HON.…”

“…The present study deals with the application of artificial intelligence techniques coupled with Box-Behnken (BB) design to model the process parameters for biosorption of cadmium below 1 ppm using live Spirulina (Arthrospira) sp. (A. indica, A. maxima and A. platensis) as adsorbent in lab scale open race way pond (0.5 m long, 0.4 m wide and 0.075 m deep) with Zarrouk medium [13,14]. A continuous process is developed for desorption of cadmium from Spirulina (Arthrospira) plantensis.…”
