Spirocerca lupi infection in the dog: A review

Abstract: Spirocercosis is a disease occurring predominantly in Canidae, caused by the nematode Spirocerca lupi. Typical clinical signs are regurgitation, vomiting and dyspnoea. The lifecycle involves an intermediate (coprophagous beetle) and a variety of paratenic hosts. Larvae follow a specific migratory route, penetrating the gastric mucosa of the host, migrating along arteries, maturing in the thoracic aorta before eventually moving to the caudal oesophagus. Here the worm lives in nodules and passes larvated eggs wh… Show more

“…Spirocercosis is a disease that affects carnivores, especially canids ( VAN DER MERWE et al, 2008). Occurrences of S. lupi and Acanthocephala should follow the same pattern among the canids, since their intermediate and parathenic host overlap.…”

“…However, the prevalence rate recorded from our study is on the lower side compared with what has been reported elsewhere 2,4,10 . Variation in prevalence of this parasite has been mainly attributed to high prevalence of intermediate and paratenic hosts and whether the dogs are stray, farm dogs or pets 26 .…”

“…The larvae of Spirocerca lupi pierce the gastric mucosal barrier than severe mixed inflammatory/neoplastic-like reaction and forms nodular foci, these are generally known as granulomas (van der Merwe et al, 2008). The initial stage of inflammation, larvae encircled by loose connective tissue that are extremely vascularised and containing fibrinrich fluid, neutrophils, and foci of necrosis.…”
