Abstract: The aim of this systematic review was to answer these questions: What does spirituality means to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD)? And are there associations between spirituality and the health outcomes and general well-being of patients with ESRD? Thirty-three studies met the review criteria. “…Participants of this study experienced spiritual fluctuation with ESRD and considered spirituality as a way of accepting, understanding, and coping with ESRD. These results were similar to the findings of other studies like Al-Ghabeesh et al Also, the findings of the current study were consistent with some other studies regarding the significance of spirituality (Al-Ghabeesh et al, 2018;Molzahn et al, 2012;Scaife, 2006). Kaba et al (2007), Sahaf et al (2017), and Weitz (2012) have found that uncertainty is inevitable and is created in a patient's mind in the course of the disease, and people are forced to live with uncertainty and confusion when many things can go wrong or further disability is likely with the progress of the disease.…”

Participants of this study experienced spiritual fluctuation with ESRD and considered spirituality as a way of accepting, understanding, and coping with ESRD.…”

“…The introduction of religious or spiritual interventions for chronic HD patients helps trigger positive emotions during stress and influences overall health (measured using quality of life indices), including patients’ commitment and adherence to hemodialysis [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. A systematic review of 33 studies examining spiritual aspects of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) demonstrated a positive correlation between spirituality and the well-being of patients with ESRD.…”

“…There is also evidence suggesting positive association between spirituality and health outcomes of patients with end stage renal disease. 27 Further, a robust belief system was found to be positively associated with coping skills in patients with schizophrenia, 23 among other mental illnesses. 9 Lastly, Kremer et al suggested potential psychoneuro-immunological mechanisms, as they observed that spiritual coping among patients with AIDS leads to slower HIV disease progression (CD4 cells preservation and sustained undetectable viral load, defined as the number of HIV RNA copies per milliliter of blood), as well as more positive health behaviors, such as adherence to therapy and safer sexual behavior.…”
