A growing number of researchers are testing potential problematic forms of religiousness that denote anxieties regarding sacred matters. However, only a few studies have assessed how religious/spiritual struggle is associated with positive outcomes. Because people’s coping responses to stressors are key determinants of their well-being, we expected that different coping strategies could be potential mediators between religious problems/tensions and life satisfaction. The research was conducted on a group of 744 Roman Catholics. We used the Religious Comfort and Strain Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) questionnaire. The outcomes show that religious comfort correlated positively with life satisfaction, while fear/guilt, negative emotions toward God, and negative social interactions surrounding religion correlated negatively with life satisfaction. Our research amplifies the understanding of the religious/spiritual struggles and life satisfaction relationship, mediated by “secular” coping strategies. It confirms that both religious and secular methods of experiencing different strains seem to coexist with multiple other strategies in the context of broadly understood life satisfaction.

This paper explored how pastors in Central Kenya Conference can experience emotional healing using 40 pastors as participants in the questionnaire and eight pastors’ representatives in the interview as informants. The study employed a questionnaire and an interview protocol as data collection instruments. The questionnaire was administered to the purposively selected participants, five (5) from each of the eight stations. In addition, interviews were conducted with the eight pastors’ representatives to deduce their particular views and perspectives on emotional hurt and healing. Five items emerged: prayer, sermons, good relationships, forgiveness and counselling support as healing strategies. The study thus recommends that for emotional healing and/or wellbeing to take place, pastors should be intentional about prayer, believing in what they preach, reconciling their broken relationships, forgiving in order to be forgiven and embracing counselling services.

There is growing evidence that a sense of meaning in life may emerge, in part, from the social relationships that people maintain. But it is not clear how the relationship between social ties and a sense of meaning might arise. The purpose of this study is to see if meaning in life is associated with three socially focused virtues: compassion, forgiveness of others, and providing social support to others. In the process, an effort is made to see if these social virtues arise from social relationships in religious institutions. Two main findings emerge from a recent nationwide survey. First, people who are more compassionate, more forgiving, and who help others more often have a stronger sense of meaning in life. Second, individuals who receive more spiritual support from fellow church members are more likely to adopt these social virtues. The theoretical basis of these relationships is discussed.
