Background Covid 19 pandemic has imposed the increased workload and challenges to birth attendants while providing the required care for delivery in mothers. However, so far, no study has been performed based on the experiences and views of this group. The present study was performed with the aim of filling the existing research gap in this field by exploring the real time experiences of birth attendants in caring for suspected/infected pregnant mothers during the pandemic. Methods The present research is a qualitative phenomenological study that was conducted on birth attendants (midwives and doctors) of pregnant women suspected/infected with covid-19 in the delivery department of teaching hospitals located in Mashhad, Iran, from March to May 2020. The qualitative data was collected about the real time experiences of the participants and was analyzed by six methodological steps proposed by Van Menen (1990). Results Interviews were performed with 12 birth attendants working in teaching hospitals. Four final themes were obtained about the real time experience of this group for caring pregnant women suspected/infected with Covid-19 in the delivery department. These themes included: "lost peace", "spirituality", "pride" and "looking forward to a better future". Conclusion The final results indicated that despite the fact that midwives/gynecologists played a valuable role as obstetricians in the frontline of the fight against the Covid-19 disease, they faced many challenges in various occupational, personal, and emotional dimensions. By the way, structural organizational policies are recommended to provide midwives/gynecologists an equal and safe position to fully perform their profession and a have healthy relationship within the family.

Aim. To examine the state of sleep quality among maternal and child health (MCH) nurses and explore the associations between chronotype, night shift work schedule, quality of work life, and sleep quality among MCH nurses. Background. MCH nurses, who play an important role in protecting the health of women and children, often experience poor sleep quality. However, research on the sleep quality of MCH nurses has been scarce following implementation of the three-child policy in China. Methods. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted with 1426 MCH nurses. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, participants’ self-reported chronotype, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Work-Related Quality of Life-2 scale. A chi-squared test, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation test, and binary logistic regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Results. Of the 1426 respondents, 57.9% reported poor sleep quality. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that chronotype, including intermediate-morning, intermediate-evening, and evening (reference: morning), and quality of work life, including stress at work, control at work, and general well-being, had effects on sleep quality among MCH nurses. Older age, frequent caffeine intake, and irregular meals were also associated with poor sleep quality. However, night shift work schedule did not affect sleep quality in the adjusted model. Conclusions. Poor sleep quality was common among MCH nurses. The findings of this study also illustrate that chronotype and quality of work life are closely related to sleep quality. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing managers should be aware of MCH nurses’ chronotype and quality of work life and tailor interventions to address both modifiable and nonmodifiable factors associated with sleep to improve MCH nurses’ sleep quality.

INTRODUCTIONThe profession of midwifery is seen as a genuinely individual-centric catalyst transforming compassion to care. Due to this, compassionate care should be the basis of midwives' care, especially for those who care for women and children. This research investigated the compassion levels of midwives to determine the factors affecting them. METHODS This descriptive research was conducted between 10 February and 29 May 2020, with 119 midwives working in a training and research hospital in Istanbul. The data were collected using the 'Compassion Scale' and analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and logistic regression model. RESULTS The total mean score on the compassion scale of midwives participating in the study was found to be 71.46 ± 9.60. Sociodemographic data and vocational belongings of participants were compared with the mean scores of the compassion scale subdimensions. It was determined that as the age of the midwives increased, they showed more kindness and awareness of compassion (p<0.021, p<0.023, respectively). It has been determined that as the education level of midwives decreases, their compassion level also decreases and they become more insensitive (p<0.044). It was found that being married increased the kindness (p<0.023) and common humanity characteristics (p<0.032) that affect compassion. It was found that the levels of kindness (p<0.020) and awareness (p<0.048) increased for those who had children, and compassion was associated with having a child. In addition, a statistically significant relationship was found between the professional commitment and kindness of the midwives participating in the study (p<0.034). It was found that midwives' knowledge of rules related to professional ethics increased their compassion scale scores by 1.2. CONCLUSIONS Midwifery is a profession with a high sense of spirituality. However, professional belonging, love of the profession and professional development positively affect midwives' levels of compassion. Improving midwives' feelings of belonging and their professional development will also contribute to the quality of maternal and infant health.
