Introduction. Patients with cancer face challenges in finding the meaning of life. This study aimed to examine the effect of spirituality-based education on the meaning of life of cancer patients.Material and methods. This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pretest and posttest design with two groups. The data were collected by using personal information forms and the meaning-of-life questionnaire. Patients in Iran were selected via convenience sampling and were divided into the experimental (n = 85) and control groups (n = 84) based on nonrandom allocation. The experimental group received six sessions of mobile spirituality-based education in three weeks. One month after the pretest and at the end of the spirituality-based education, the posttest was conducted. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with SPSS software.Results. A comparison of the scores of the patients in the two groups after the intervention suggested a significant increase in the scores for the presence of meaning, search for meaning, and meaning of life for the patients in the experimental group (p = 0.001).Conclusions. The results of this study indicated that spirituality-based education can be one of the useful, effective, and applicable educational techniques to improve the meaning of life of cancer patients.

Objetivo: Avaliar o enfrentamento do câncer após a inclusão da espiritualidade do paciente no tratamento quimioterápico. Método: ensaio clínico randomizado, realizado com 30 pacientes portadores de câncer em tratamento quimioterápico em uma Unidade de Assistência de Alta Complexidade em Oncologia. A intervenção que incluiu a dimensão espiritual do paciente durante o cuidado foi o Relaxamento, Imagens Mentais e Espiritualidade, e para avaliar o enfrentamento foi utilizada a Escala de Modos de Enfrentamento de Problemas. Pesquisa cadastrada no Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos sob o número RBR-9qpmcfr. Resultados: a estratégia de enfrentamento mais utilizada pelos participantes da intervenção foi a prática religiosa/pensamento fantasioso, antes e depois da intervenção, e para o grupo controle a principal estratégia foi focalizada no problema no início da coleta e prática religiosa/pensamento fantasioso e no problema, no segundo momento da pesquisa. Apesar disso, não foram observadas diferenças estatísticas no modo de enfrentamento entre os grupos estudados. Conclusão: apesar de não serem identificadas diferenças no enfrentamento do câncer após a inclusão da espiritualidade no tratamento quimioterápico, observa-se que as principais maneiras que o paciente utiliza para enfrentar o diagnóstico e tratamento do câncer envolvem questões relacionadas à espiritualidade. Assim, é importante considerar esta dimensão durante o plano terapêutico. Palavras-Chave: Espiritualidade; Religião; Ensaio Clínico; Adaptação Psicológica; Neoplasias.

Spirituality-centered cognitive therapy refers to the way in which people search for and express the meaning and purpose of their lives, as well as experience connection with themselves, others, nature, and spirituality. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of spirituality-centered cognitive therapy on body image, sexual function, disease perception, and disturbing thoughts in women after mastectomy. This was semi-experimental research, which was conducted via a pre-test–post-test method and had a control group. The samples included 85 women with breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy, and, based on the inclusion criteria, 78 individuals were randomly selected and were then divided into two groups (39 individuals in the intervention group and 39 individuals in the control group). The intervention group received eight 120 min sessions of spirituality-centered cognitive therapy, and the control group did not receive any training. Data were collected using questionnaires on illness perception, body image, sexual function, and rumination and were then analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measurements using SPSS-24. Before the training, there was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups in the scores obtained by the scales. After the intervention, the mean scores in all scales except sexual function were significantly different from the control group. Therefore, spirituality-centered cognitive therapy may be useful for improving negative psychological symptoms among women in Iran with breast cancer after mastectomy surgery.
