Spinosad‐associated modulation of select cytochrome P450s and glutathione S‐transferases in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata

Abstract: The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)) is an insect pest that threatens potato crops. Multiple options exist to limit the impact of this pest even though insecticides remain a primary option for its control.

“…Higher expression levels are observed in the 1st instar and gradually decrease in the later instars. A homolog of this gene was highly upregulated in Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata , in response to spinosyn applied directly to the abdomen of adults 58 . Using predictive bioinformatic software, C2, C36 and C51 on spinosyn A and C2, C27 and C52 on spinosyn D were consistently identified as potential targets of oxidation by cytochrome P 450 s, suggesting that these cytochrome P 450 enzymes may be involved in spinosyn detoxification.…”

“…Carboxylesterases are correlated with spinosyn resistance in a number of arthropod species, such as Frankliniella occidentalis (insecticide: Success2, Dow Agrosciences), P. xylostella (insecticide from Dow Agrosciences) and Musca domestica (insecticide from Dow Agrosciences) 59–61 . As well, venom carboxylesterase 6‐like was upregulated in spinosyn‐treated adults of the Colorado potato beetle 58 …”

“…In addition to the effect of exogenous substances on insect reproduction and development, the detoxification and metabolism of exogenous substances by pests have been extensively studied [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. In this study, 28 DEGs were primarily enriched in the “drug metabolism- other enzymes”, “glutathione metabolism” and “Metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450” pathways.…”
