Spindle cell melanoma: Incidence and survival, 1973‑2017

Abstract: Spindle cell melanoma (SCM) is a rare morphological subtype of melanoma, which is relatively uncharacterized. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of SCM, its general demographics, basic clinico-pathologic features, treatment outcomes and disease-specific prognostic factors. SCM cases were sampled from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program (1973–2017). A total of 4761 SCM cases were identified, with a median age of 66 years. The female:male ratio was 0.62:1. Sta… Show more

“…Via the National Cancer Institute's SEER*Stat software (version 8.3.5; SEER 18 Regs Custom Data [with an additional treatment field], November 2017 Sub [1973-2015 varying] database), we identified 3,983 penile cancer patients with known marital statuses between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2015. The SEER database covers approximately 28% of the US population and collects information on cancer patients, including demographic information, primary tumour locations, cancer stages, treatment modalities and survival times 11.…”

“…DM is more commonly diagnosed in men with a 2:1 male to female ratio (Table ). DM patients also tend to be older compared with non‐DM patients by about 10 years on average, with a median age at diagnosis of approximately 69 years for DM patients . A recent analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer database demonstrates a gradually rising incidence of DM from 1992 to 2007 .…”

“…Unlike conventional melanoma, it often forms a non‐specific, non‐pigmented nodule on the skin . It is therefore difficult to identify clinically at the early stages and hence metastasis is a known complication . Early detection and surgical removal of any forms of cutaneous melanoma increases the 5‐year relative survival rate to 98% .…”
