Spindle Cell Lipoma Occurring in the Buccal Mucosa: An Unusual Location of This Benign Lipomatous Neoplasm

Abstract: Spindle cell lipoma is a benign lipomatous neoplasm, which rarely occurs in the oral cavity. The aims of this paper are to report a case of spindle cell lipoma located in buccal mucosa and discuss the main clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical findings of this entity. Thus, we report a 4-year history of an asymptomatic smooth surface nodule in an elderly Caucasian man with clinical hypothesis of fibroma. The histopathological examination showed spindle cells, mature adipose tissue, and many mast cell… Show more

“…From a histologic point of view, SCLs are made up of mature adipocytes and CD34+ spindle cells in a myxoid matrix with bands of birefringent collagen. Their histological differential diagnosis includes benign lesions such as classic lipoma, schwannoma, neurofibroma, leiomyoma, solitary fibrous tumor (whose prognosis is regarded as uncertain) and truly malignant ones such as atypical lipomatous tumors (well-differentiated liposarcoma), and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans [13]. In particular, secondary degenerative modifications and atrophy observed in SCL must not be mistaken with the malignant histologic features seen in liposarcomas [14].…”

“…Conservative surgical removal is the most indicated treatment for intraoral SCL and no recurrences are expected if the lesion is completely excised ( 1 , 9 - 12 , 14 ). Fregnani et al .…”
