Spinal infections

Abstract: Spinal infections have an increasing prevalence among the general population. Definitive diagnosis based solely on clinical grounds is usually not possible and radiological imaging is used in almost all patients. The primary aim of the authors is to present an overview of spinal infections located in epidural, intradural and intramedullary compartments and to provide diagnostic clues regarding different imaging modalities, particularly MRI, to the practicing physicians and radiologists.

“…These diseases may suppress the defense mechanisms and cause microorganisms to spread from the primary infection foci to the vertebrae. 1 It has been noted that DM is the most frequently accompanying disease in patients of spondylodiscitis due to miscellaneous bacteria. 13,14 Comparable with the literature, in our study, 40% of the spondylodiscitis patients caused by miscellaneous bacteria had accompanying diabetes mellitus.…”

“…Inflammation may be caused by not only pyogenic or granulomatous infections but also spinal surgeries or may be idiopathic. 1 At present, pyogenic osteomyelitis of the vertebrae account for 2e4% of all osteomyelitis patients. 2,3 There has been a considerable increase in patients of pyogenic spondylodiscitis in the last 10e15 years.…”

“…At present, it remains endemic to many parts of the world, most notably because of the close contact between sheep, dogs, and humans. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Humans may become intermediate hosts through exposure to a definitive host, sheep, or dog, or ingestion of contaminated water or vegetables. Hydatid disease can involve almost every organ of the body.…”

“…Hydatid disease can involve almost every organ of the body. 1,2,[4][5][6] Classically, an intact hydatid cyst is classified as simple or typical cyst. On the other hand, a perforated cyst, with or without superinfection, is described as complicated or atypical cyst, if it had ruptured into the neighboring cavity, either spontaneously or iatrogenically.…”

“…Surgical abscesses are rare and drainage or decompression is hardly ever needed. [1][2][3][4][5] This blood supply regresses in adults and predominantly the end-artery metaphyseal branches remain. The infection usually begins in the anterior subchondral regions and spreads secondarily to the disk.…”
