Summary Nine cases of retroperitoneal haemorrhage complicating anticoagulant therapy are reported. Six cases were receiving heparin for myocardial infarction: an incidence of 4·3% of patients on such treatment. All the cases presented with pain, six had neurological involvement and one patient died. The incidence of this complication is higher than previously noted. Retroperitoneal haemorrhage requires a high index of clinical suspicion for early diagnosis and treatment if serious sequaelae are to be prevented.

SUMMARYA case of spinal subdural hematoma occurring in association with anticoagulant therapy is reported. Seven similar cases from the literature are reviewed with emphasis on the clinical features, investigation, and the results of treatment. The prognosis for recovery is good, only if the condition is diagnosed and the clot evacuated before severe spinal cord compression and subsequent ischemic necrosis has occurred.

Similarly, in cases of peridural spinal haematoma occurring in patients on anticoagulant therapy (Spurny et al, 1964: Strain, 1964 prothrombin times were not uniformly a guide to impending disaster. In addition to muscle weakness and sensory loss, causalgia may be incapacitating, as in the 17-year-old boy described by Prill (1965) and the lady discussed here (Case 1).…”
