Spinal Cord Stimulation: A Contemporary Series

Abstract: Forty-three patients with chronic pain disorders of different causes were selected for spinal cord stimulation. All underwent implantation of a ribbon electrode through a small laminotomy, under general anesthesia. Thirteen patients (30%) failed to obtain significant pain relief during a period of trial stimulation, and their electrodes were removed. The remainder underwent a definitive implant and were followed for a mean of 13 months (range, 3-33 months). Nineteen of them (63%) continued to experience pain r… Show more

“…The use of plate type electrodes can also contribute to a reduction in the incidence of electrode migration. 76 Average rates of lead breakage and pulse generator complications were found to be respectively 7% and 2%. Burchiel 46 found that in 17% of the patients, the reported complications required surgical intervention.…”

“…Application of electrical stimulation to the spinal cord (SCS) for alleviating intractable, chronic pain has received wide acceptance (Long and Erickson 1975;Demirel et al 1984;Broseta et al 1986;Meglio et al 1989;Devulder et al 1991;Spiegelman and Friedman 1991). The procedure entails implantation of an array of electrodes either surgically or percutaneously into the dorsal epidural space (Racz et al 1989;Barolat et al 1991).…”
