Over an 18-month period, 24 patients were admitted with spinal cord injuries in a non-governmental organization hospital in one of the world's poorest countries, Sierra Leone. Seven patients died while in hospital. Followup data was available for 13 of the 17 survivors an average of 17.4 (10-28) months after discharge. Five patients were still alive.Résumé Sur une période du 18 mois, 24 malades ont été admis avec des lésions de la moelle épinière dans un hôpital d'une organisation non-gouvernementale, dans un des pays les plus pauvres du monde, le Sierra Leone.Sept malades sont décédés pendant leur séjour à l' hôpital. Le suivi est disponible pour 13 des 17 survivants avec une moyenne de 17,4 (10-28) mois après l'hospitalisation. Cinq malades étaient encore vivants.

Profile of spinal injuries in Lagos, Nigeria

. Results: A total of 468 cases of spinal cord injury over the 15-year period were studied. Three hundred and twelve of them (66.2%) were aged 40 years and below, with the peak age incidence as 21-30 years. There were 328 males (70.1%) and 140 females (29.9%) showing a male to female ratio of 2.34:1. Road traffic accident accounted for 362 (77.4%) patients. At presentation, 430 (91.9%) of the injuries were of ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) class A. Lumbar spine was affected in 278 (59.4%) of patients, whereas cervical spine accounted for 142 (30.3%). The most frequently seen complication was bedsore, seen in 163 (59.9%) of 272 patients that had complications. On discharge, 230 patients (49.1%) were in ASIA class A and 34 (7.5%) in ASIA E. Eighty-two patients (17.5%) died. Conclusion: Spinal injuries in Lagos occurred mostly in young adult males affecting mainly the lumbar spine. Traffic-related incidents were the leading cause and bedsore the most common complication.

IntroductionTraumatic spinal cord injuries can have catastrophic physical, psychological, and social consequences, particularly in low resource settings. Since many of these injuries result in irreversible damages, it is essential to understand risk factors for them and focus on primary prevention strategies. The objectives of this study are to describe the demographics, injury characteristics, and management of traumatic spinal cord injury victims presenting to the Adult Emergency Centre of Tikur Anbessa Specialised Hospital in Addis Ababa, the tertiary referral centre for emergency care in Ethiopia.MethodsA prospective cross sectional survey was conducted from October 2013 to March 2014 in the Adult Emergency Centre of Tikur Anbessa Specialised Hospital. Patients were identified at triage and followed through admission to discharge from the emergency centre.ResultsEighty-four patients with traumatic spinal cord injuries were identified. The mean age was 33 years and 86% were male. The most common mechanisms of injury were motor vehicle collisions (37%), falls (31%), and farming injuries (11%). The cervical spine (48%) was the most commonly injured region and 41% were complete spinal cord injuries. Most patients (77%) did not receive any prehospital care or medical care at other facilities prior to arrival in the Emergency Centre.ConclusionIn our context, traumatic spinal cord injuries predominantly affect young men, and the majority of victims suffer severe injuries with little chance of recovery. Attention to occupational and road traffic safety is essential to mitigate the personal and societal burdens of traumatic spinal cord injuries. It is also imperative to focus on improving prehospital care and rehabilitation services for traumatic spinal cord injury victims.
