Spin-polarized Tunneling in Ultrasmall Vertical Ferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions

Abstract: We have developed nanometer-scale vertical ferromagnetic tunnel junctions using a Si-based inorganic electron beam resist process, including barrier layer fabrication using metal evaporation in ozone atmosphere. The current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of Ni/NiO/Co multiple junctions with diameters of 20 nm have been measured in a magnetic field to investigate spin-polarized tunneling in the Coulomb blockade regime. The temperature dependence of the I–V curve indicates that Coulomb blockade phenomena occur at… Show more

“…The remarkable MR due to the interplay of spin-dependent tunnelling (SDT) and single electron tunnelling (SET) which is represented by the coulomb blockade (CB) of current below a threshold voltage and the coulomb staircase (CS) at higher voltages is observed in various FTJ systems. [19][20][21][22][23][24] Recently, Yakushiji et al 25 reviewed the studies on spin dependent tunnelling and CB in ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The enhancement and oscillation of MR in FTJs in correlation with CS have been predicted experimentally and theoretically by several authors.…”
