Spin-frustration with two quasi-degenerated spin states of a copper(ii) heptanuclear complex obtained from an amino acid ligand

Abstract: A Cu(ii) heptanuclear complex, Cu7atac, synthesized from an amino acid ligand showed to be an antiferromagnetic spin-frustrated bis-triangular system. Cu7atac might be a promising qubit candidate for quantum information storage.

“…The solution EPR spectra of both compounds are clearly distinguished from those in the solid state and are straightforwardly attributed to individual Cu 3 (µ 3 -OH) species of (2), and to the presence of isolated mononuclear and trinuclear species in the case of (1). Two new reports, describing the magnetic susceptibilities and (in one case) the EPR spectrum of polymeric supramolecular assemblies of copper(II) complexes, appeared in the literature recently [61,62].…”

“…3,4 The bridging ligands often play a pivotal role in originating the spinfrustration phenomenon. 2 In general, ferromagnetic behavior arises from bridging ligands and structural properties. For instance, μ 1,1 -azido (endon) coupling drives toward ferromagnetic interaction among the metal centers.…”

“…This leads to a nonclassical spin orientation in the space with respect to each other, meaning the spins are arranged as neither up-spin nor down-spin; rather, they take intermediate orientation with respect to the applied magnetic field . Due to two different competing interactions (ferro- and antiferromagnetic), the third spin carrier involved in antiparallel interaction cannot lower its exchange energy simultaneously. , Therefore, one spin or more spin centers may remain spin-frustrated and this can propagate like a stressful spin resonance among the triangular units . As a result, the residual spin may adopt any spin orientation leading to a spin-frustrated system. , The bridging ligands often play a pivotal role in originating the spin-frustration phenomenon …”
