Spin-flip Raman laser as a tunable infrared source

Abstract: The output of a spin-flip Raman laser, pumped by a Q-switched CO2 laser, has been examined with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. It was found to consist of discrete lines, separated by the longitudinal-mode spacing of the spin-flip crystal. These lines do not move as the magnetic field is varied. As a result, the usefulness of a laser operated under these conditions as a spectroscopic tool is much reduced.
