Spin coating mediated morphology modulation in self assembly of peptides

Abstract: A novel strategy for modulating the self-assembled morphology of diphenylalanine peptides based on centrifugal force mediated spin coating and spin dewetting triggered by disjoining pressure in ultra-thin films during rotation.

“…However, based on a rather counter-intuitive approach, in this article, we show that by adding thiol-capped gold NPs (AuNP) only to the top PS layer, we could completely stabilize a PS−PMMA bilayer, coated on a non-wettable substrate, above a critical AuNP concentration (C NP ≈ 10.0%). In our experiments, the thickness of both the layers is kept constant at ≈25 nm, and it was verified based on control experiments that single layers of both the polymers, as well as the particle-free bilayer, completely dewet on the hydrophobized silicon wafer substrate within 24…”

“…A film exhibits spontaneous instability when A E > 0, and from the above relation, it can be seen that λ S scales as h F 2 . While such instability is undesirable from the standpoint of a coating, dewetting-mediated pattern formation is considered as a viable nonlithographic surface patterning technique, particularly in conjugation with suitable templating strategies, and has found a direct application in the enhancement of photoluminescence, water harvesting, fabrication of water-stable self-powered ultraviolet (UV) detectors, self-assembly of peptides, and so on.…”

“…For better imaging of GO flakes, spin coating (Apex Instruments) was done to avoid agglomeration and the coffee stain effect as seen in the drop cast samples. 35 Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM, Model: Apreo LoVac), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM, Agilent Technologies, USA), and Optical Microscopy (OM, Metavis) was used for imaging. Spin coating was done on a cleaned silicon wafer using a 0.25% dilute dispersion of GO in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 1000 rpm.…”

“…Nonetheless, these molecules, also classed as nucleopeptides, are able to form supramolecular networks, cross cellular membranes and exhibit useful bioactivities [3][4][5][6][7]. Since the overall nucleopeptide properties arise from both the amino acid and nucleobase moieties, it is worth underlining that short peptides are able to selfassemble into different nanostructures [8][9][10][11], while nucleobases in synthetic molecules and especially in modified nucleosides [12][13][14][15][16] may lead to several biological properties. For example, when single nucleobases were inserted into polyamino acid chains, certain protein and peptide structures were stabilised, improving their function [17,18], while nucleobase-conjugated diphenylalanines were found to self-assemble into nanostructures useful in various biomedical applications [19][20][21].…”
